If you’ve missed Channel 4s latest realimentary show, My Big Fat Gypsy Wedding, your telly must be broken. It’s transfixing format shows the lives of our Romany cousins, who live side by side with us around the country but appear to be inhabiting a completely different dimension.
Goodness, don’t they have a passion and vitality for life, and personally I loved that pink wedding dress with the fairy lights built in. It was fun. I’m not suggesting that gypsy weddings are the new vintage, but there’s a lot to be said for adding a touch of bohemian style to your big day.
Firstly, everyone agrees that a nice place to hold a wedding is in the rolling English countryside, and what better way to enjoy the clean open air and romance of the great outdoors than booking somewhere like Wise Wedding Venue deep in the Kent countryside, where camping is welcome.
You can hire some beautiful authentic gypsy caravans, but if you’re happier camping, bell tents and teepees also make ambient resting posts, and if you prefer something with a few mod cons, there are plenty of companies that will rent you a stylish VW Camper for the weekend. Whatever you choose, whether you wake up to the scent of Roses or English Apples, it’s a lovely way to start the day.
Other places where you’ll find wide open spaces suitable for camping are Lantallach in Cornwall, and Pangdean Old Barn in Brighton.
