Gothic masterpiece to reopen

Gothic Wedding Venue

Next spring will see the long-awaited reopening of a masterpiece of Victorian architecture. Sir John Betjeman said it was too beautiful and too romantic to survive” in a world of tower blocks and concrete but somehow it did. Its survival against the odds will cause wonder; the building itself will take your breath away.

The Midland Grand hotel was designed by Sir George Gilbert Scott  and opened in 1873. This gothic flight of fancy has survived conversion to railway offices in the 1930s, World War II bombing raids, threats of demolition in the 1960s and complete closure in the 1980s. Following the extensive and devoted restoration, it will be reborn as the St. Pancras Renaissance Hotel, formally opening in May.The Renaissance Hotel will welcome wedding guests back up the dramatic forecourt and into the hotel. Natasha Thorne, who looks after weddings at the hotel, tells of “stunning Victorian detailing and opulent capacities of up to 550 people”. She adds that the hotel provides the perfect setting either for a grand wedding or a more intimate affair. “The nine event spaces displayed throughout the hotel, in addition to the extraordinary double staircase – considered to be the finest in existence – provide the setting for an unforgettable occasion.”

Casting a professional eye, Steve Christer of the Reykjavik architectural practice, Studio Granda, said that  “even in semi-dereliction, St. Pancras always had a grand feel about  it. Now, with the fine renovation of George Gilbert Scott’s gothic-revival hotel and the Eurostar terminal’s sensitive fusion of past and future it is magnificently recast as the UK’s gateway to Europe.  Imagine how such gravitas could change the Heathrow experience.”

If you are looking for a venue outside London but are taken with Scott’s wonderful work, you could consider Brighton College or the University of Glasgow. Among this hugely prolific architect’s body of work was the restoration of Chichester Cathedral.
